Dragon Fruit Season

One day, I decided to visit at an old friend of mine's place. He invited me over to his backyard garden and had a cup of coffee, while we were discussing and catching up what happened over these years I could not resist to not ask how he managed a lot of fruit trees around his small yard. One in particular that really caught my interest and amazement was the dragon fruit tree that was hanging like a grape vine and spreads on top. I was lucky that I was able to taste its fruit freshly picked because it was dragon fruit season that day and my curiosity was fulfilled because I have not tasted one yet.

I was really hesitant to buy one at the market because it was so expensive and I prefer to buy fruits like apple or oranges. But now that I have tasted one I haven't thought that it would taste good considering its benefits that it has a low carbohydrates but full of vitamins. My friend describes its taste just like any other  fruits comparable to melon or kiwi but it is very unique and very appealing to eat specially when crunching on the seeds gives sugary taste. It also has a fragrant fruity smell that is very enticing to eat and my friend suggests that dragon fruits are great addition for fruit salads.

From that day on I was inspired to plant my dragon fruit, I also asked him some dragon fruit cuttings and he gave me a bunch of cutting so I could start growing a lot of them. He then gave me 3 types of dragon fruit cuttings which would bear fruits red, white, and yellow. I had planted them as soon as I had gone home and now they are growing fast.

Most dragon fruit will bloom from the month of June until it bears fruit and it is the beginning of a rainy season also here in the tropical regions like the Philippines. I have began seeing again dragon fruits bearing flowers today but my dragon fruit plants is still immature and could not yet produce any flowers or fruits, maybe another year before it could bear any flower/fruits. While I was passing by a road I saw a dragon fruit which had flowers already blooming at night and there were still a lot of small flowers also that sprung. Even though the dragon fruit that I saw was like being neglected but still it crawled towards the roof and bore flowers.

On my next post I will show you how to create a pot that is very suitable for dragon fruits to survive.
